Topic: Can we use 2d sprites instead of 3d models as characters?

Since its difficult to create 3d characters and using 3d characters can also increase the overall size of the game, can we use 2d sprites as charcters..?

Not officially but sort of.  There are some limitations currently.

2D puppet style animation (using bones) should work.  Have a look at this post for Mojao's attempt at it, and here's a vid with it working in a beat 'em up style mod.

Sprite based animation is currently not possible but it is something we're working on.

FYI, 3D models and associated textures actually take up less space than sprites, especially if you're using high resolution sprites.  But 16-32 bit sprites might be of smaller file size.

Any update as to when you might make 2d character with full sprite ?
I mean animation using frames like mugen engine.
