Topic: Arena Fighters

This is a project I've worked on since I was a child (I think before I was 10.) I wanted to create my own easy to control fighting game that had a fair learning curve, while also being quick to pick up if you were new. I started the project in M.U.G.E.N ('06), and was barely able to make one balanced "complete" character. A few years afterward I started again in Game Maker, then 2DFM, and finally, many years later, I began to learn Unity and eventually seen UFE and brought it. I have been developing the game in UFE since August 2014.

-------------------------------------------------

Arena Fighters features a array of different characters to control, each with their own unique feel and control. One character may be quick and have many rushdown moves while another may be slow but have hard hitting hits and good reach. The game uses a three button layout, of which are used for light, medium and heavy attacks, respectively. There are some defensive mechanics such as an Escape feature to prevent block lockdowns and a combo breaker feature. Special Moves are easy to pull off, if you are used to traditional fighting game directional commands. The game is intended for fighting game beginners/casuals.

The game is still about two or more years away from release. The alpha/beta will be free, and the final product will be free as well. It is best played with friends.

I am not the best 3D modeler so I typically make most of the characters in Fuse and see what touchups I can do on them in other programs or Unity itself. The game is still early in development so most of the models, sound effects, and such currently are placeholder.

Check out my YouTube channel/Subscribe for more videos on it, i'll post some on this post from time to time.

Things like a fireball for instance was easy for me to do, by setting the button sequences to Down then Forward, (keeping Input Latency disabled) and setting the execution button for a button.

Re: Arena Fighters

This looks great! The sort of combo connections remind me of Tekken (in a satisfying way), and the reactions the characters have when being hit is great. I'm fascinated by those column particle effects that seem to indicate some sort of power. What's that all about?

I actually just realized how outdated the recent video is, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! The latest version of the game looks very different, i'll have to record some footage of it sometime soon and get it uploaded.

Re: Arena Fighters

Your animations feel mashed together in the game unfortunately and makes the combo barely readable. I play a lot of fighting games and the moves feel like it was rushed. Keep going with this, put a little more effort and polish into your movesets... also solidify your mechanics too... the game feels too thrown together.

Re: Arena Fighters

Good work man. Btw on the particles make sure it's doesn't follow the character. You will tell a hell of a difference.

I agree with KC

Your combos aren t bad. But they're very rushed. .

Your animations don't keep up with how many hit there are.

But still nice work.

Congrats!! I love the way it looks and it feels very satisfying to watch.. I have a couple of question about the moves:

1. How are you able to make each move so easily cancel out into another move? Did you do chain moves for every single one of them?

2. How do you make it such that the player can move forward at the same time as performing an attack? Do you use self-applied forces for this?

Re: Arena Fighters

Do you have any experience with the Fighter Pack Bundle that's on the Asset Store? I've been having issues getting the hit animations to work at all.
